A Note from the Authors...
Matter is everything around us; the car we drive everyday, the toothpaste we use to clean our teeth, and the dog wagging its tail at the doorstep when we come home are all examples of matter. Atoms and molecules make up everything that we see with the naked eye. Have you ever wondered why a glow stick glows or why an ice cube melts outside of the freezer? Well, that's because matter doesn't simply exist, it interacts with anything and everything around it. In this unit plan, you will find a variety of ways to teach the concepts that uncover the interactions that take up our day to day lives. The unit is split up into three different sub-units: atoms, molecule properties and behaviors, and chemical reactions. Each link above will direct you to the lesson descriptions and the detailed lesson plans for the respective sub-unit. Below is a visual representation of the flow of the unit. In addition, in each respective sub-unit link, you will find a description connecting the lesson to the Next Generation Science Standards. We've highlighted a variety of teaching techniques throughout our lesson in the hopes to provide you with a comprehensive unit on matter and its interactions.
